In the Pelican Bay solitary unit, prisoners spend 22.5 to 24 hours a day in an 80-square-foot, concrete, windowless cell — about the size of a king-size bed. They can’t make phone calls. And they’re often denied visitors and physical activity.

Read the whole essay about how America keeps thousands of men and women it puts away, and thousands of whom the rooms without windows are homes for 10 to 20 years.  A recent news report quotes the Colorado [State] Director of Corrections promising reform after spending 23 hours in solitary confinement in one of the state’s jails, to reform solitary confinement policies after spending the night in an isolated cell, an experiment he said left him “feeling twitchy and paranoid.”  Hopefully, the promised reform will come very quickly and here’s also hoping other states will reform this very cruel treatment of fellow human beings.  

There have been men sent to such on crimes they were later found – often after decades – NOT to have committed.
