Spunky Cibulkova stuns Kerber to win women’s year-ending tennis crown at Singapore – Tola Adenle

October 30, 2016

Sports, Women

28 year-old World Number 8, and Tournament ranked #7, Dominika Cibulkova shook off her Round Robin three-setter loss to World & Tournament-ranked #1, Angelique Kerber to pull off the greatest win of her career at her maiden appearance at the WTA Championship at Singapore on Sunday.

In a 6-3, 6-4 match that lasted a mere 1 hour 16 minutes – incidentally about the same length of time it took Kerber to run the defending champion & World #3 Radwanska out of the court during the Round Robin stage – the spunky Slovak went into the final match having won a mere five of the total ten sets she played.  However, the three sets Kerber lost in the tournament came at Cibulkova’s hand: a set at their first meeting during the Round Robin three-setter which included a tie-breaker and the two straight-setter final.

And unlike Kerber who hadly broke sweat in her earlier matches, including the walk-in-the-park put-away of the defending champion, Cibulkova had to grind her way up from the first loss to the Number One; a 6-1,6-4 loss to Madison Keys; a 6-3, 7-6 (5) win over Simona Halep and a  gritty performance against veteran work-horse (one of my favorites), Sveta Kuznetsova, which she pulled off in a 1-6; 7-6 & 6-4 victory.

Kerber did not GIVE Cibulkova the victory; she clearly lost.  Cibulkova got into the match early and did not let up except for rare slips, and with an incredible first serves percentage of 83 percentage, the door was shut against any long rallies. As the winning return hit the net and then dropped close to it, it was an unexpected to a year that had been very good for Kerber. For Dominika, I bet she can hardly wait for 2017 to begin Down Under!

Dominika deserves her victory, and here’s wishing her the best as she definitely enters a new level in her career..

      Dear B.,

Yes, a surprise, though not a too bigger one than how Kerber has suddenly, though older than Dominika, can start dominating the field at about the same stage of their careers.

I see the field fairly open right now: Aga, Simona, Madison, the down-on&by-herself Caroline Woz. & even a couple more – once, of course, The Queen moves on to more interesting things in her life.

      Ẹ ku ipalẹmọ. Ọkọ̀ a ré fó.

      Thanks, Sir.
