A war on corruption? Cook of a top official at Nigeria’s NNPC absconds with US$6 million cash! – Tola Adenle

Esther Nnamdi-Ogbue, the NNPC MD who, like many top civil servants, politicians, political jobbers … have so much cash – and in various foreign currencies stacked in their homes – that a cook – chef, she named him – could cart six million greenbacks PLUS jewelry.

Why does Nigeria need to keep borrowing as have been written here many times when there’s enough cash out there to take back by government from looters?

How is the system so defective that these thieves can keep on taking out so much without it being detected?

Esther is not the first, an aberration, the only remaining thief at the NNPC and everywhere despite a supposed WAR ON CORRUPTION. Stella Oduah is today a “lawmaker” of the “Federal” Republic of Nigeria despite the billions she was widely reported to have mismanaged as Jonathan-era minister; she’s not the only one, just the one whose image passed through my mind as I beheld a face that looks as smug as hers.

Outing the big thieves parading as big Ogas at the Top in government cannot be difficult if the will to fight corruption – NO MATTER WHO IS CONCERNED – is there. In the very early going of this administration, many Nigerians – including this blogger – had suggestions on how Buhari could win the war. Included in my own contribution was having an open line – not necessarily phone lines – which can be used by Nigerians to report on those living definitely well beyond what their earnings dictate.

Under the present system of “fighting corruption”, however, this cannot work as evident from the case of Army General Buratai’s foreign properties in Dubai which the Army dismissed as not fraudulent but the result of SAVINGS by the wife/wives. The following is a part of the statement issued by Nigerian Army to dismiss campaign “to discredit the hard-earned reputation and good name” of Buratai:

“… The allegations contained in the Sahara Reporters write up are baseless and not correct. It is a fact that the Buratai family have two properties in Dubai that were paid for instalmentally through personal savings three years ago. This, along with other personal assets have consistently been declared by General Buratai in his Assets Declaration Form as Commander Multinational Joint Task Force Commander and as Chief of Army Staff …”

What Buratai’s wives did to save the hundreds of thousands of dollars within the short period of “instalment” payments was never made public by the “corruption-fighting” Buhari administration.

And with big ìbakasiẹ – humongous Biblical animal that would find it easier to go through the proverbial needle’s eye than the rich supposedly getting to heaven – walking free from corruption allegations, the Esther Nnamdi-Ogbues … with their teeny few million-dollar thefts will continue to thrive.

When will these thieves be sent to where they belong – jails with no re-entry-to-society-for-life while all their verifiable assets be seized as opposed to the half-hearted and selective “war on corruption” that is the “change” Nigerians were not expecting of the Buhari we thought we all knew?

Maybe Buhari will learn to listen to people one day and bring criminals to book.

      Dear Folakemi,

It should be the way to go but as you and I know, things never take the normal or natural trajectory but we’ll keep knocking on wood and, hopefully, Nigeria will one day reach her full potential.

      Thanks, and regards,
