Obit: Ayọra Bọlá Kúforíjì-Olúbí passes on – Tola Adenle

December 5, 2016

The death of Ayọra Kuforiji-Olubi, a female pioneer in industry and commerce and a top society figure in Nigeria, occurred on Saturday, December 3, 2016.

Kuforiji-Olubi started as a teacher, having attended the famous St. Agnes College, Ikeja in present-day Lagos State. Although from Abeokuta, she was raised in the Northern part of the country and would proceed to the United Kingdom like many Nigerians of her generation and earned a Bachelors Degree in Economics but was not ready in 1963 at graduation to return home. Her educational plan was to study Accounting, a plan that saw her realize her dream in 1967.

She joined one of the old Colonial-era companies, Vivian Young and Bond – VYB – on arrival as Deputy Finance Controller and five years later, she became the Finnance Controller.

Ms. Olubi’s career saw her lead the Accounting body in Nigeria, ICAN as President, and holding the post of a Nigeria’s Minister of Commerce in the late 1980s as well as serving as Chairman of the Board of one of Nigeria’s oldest banks, the United Bank for Africa (UBA), scoring many firsts along the way. She also sat on many government and private boards, including a stint as Chairman of Ogun-Osun River Basin where she was the first nominee to occupy that position.

VYB, as her first and only employer is now known, was where Ms. Olubi would make the most mark as Managing Director, a post she assumed in 1977.

Ayọra Kuforiji-Olubi, who left behind three children to mourn her, turned eighty a couple of months ago. May she find eternal rest in the Lord.

Read the rest of the following blast from the past – Emotan, A Woman’s Magazine, May/June 1979 – an interview conducted by this blogger which was posted on this blog on January 2, 2012. She would remain one of blogger’s older “Sisters” and “Aunts” from that first encounter.
