Of all US presidents, George Herbert Walker Bush was one of the most prepared to lead the country. He served in the Navy during which he got shot down, served as US head at the UN, became US ambassador to China as the country was opening up to the West and the world and led the CIA as the agency’s director. Born a Yankee in Massachusetts, the man who would later become the 41st President of the United States was an oil businessman in Texas who served two terms in the US House of Representatives, representing Texas District 7, a career move that would serve him well as US vice president to Ronald Reagan and later, as US President, beating Dukakis, the Democrat, to win in 1988. His path to the presidency made his “A President We Won’t Have to Train” slogan during his campaign very credible unlike his “Read my lips, no new taxes”, a promise broken during his presidency that would sink his re-election bid.

President Bush saw his son, George W. Bush become the 43rd President of the U.S. in 1996, and another son who was Governor of Florida run during the 2016 election cycle, an election that was won by a fellow Republican, Donald Trump, perhaps the worst president the U.S. has ever had.

He was a decent human being, a real family man whose love and closeness to his spouse, Barbara Bush – who preceded him in death by about 7 months – was legendary. He is survived by five children.

May his soul rest in perfect peace.
